Hanging Magnets
There are so many designs and brands of street sweepers it’s hard to design a single solution that will work on everyone, but because of this there is one general type of magnet that makes the most sense for street sweepers, and that’s a hanging magnet.
A hanging magnet makes the most sense because it is a flexible solution that can generally be hung from almost any street sweeper. It’s also economical and if located and hung properly doesn’t interfere with Street sweeper operation.
Hanging magnets come in a number of configurations, designs and strengths with varying features that can make the job harder or easier. Therefore pay attention to the features of each one.

The ISO magnetic sweeper is a hanging magnet design specifically designed for highway maintenance operations.
The ISO design allows you to leave the magnet permanently mounted, enabling you to lower and deploy the magnet for use when needed, and then easily raise and secure it when not needed or for transport between locations.
High end “bumper wheels” keep the magnet off the ground and multiple mounting points keep this magnet where it should be.
A Quick Clean Off Sleeve makes cleaning debris off the magnet easy!
The ISO magnetic sweeper has a bit more power than the strongest 4.5x4.5 Wrasse magnet, so it will give you an extra half inch of pickup power.

The PYR hanging magnet was designed for flat terrain and “on road” type uses where not much ground strike prevention is needed. “On road” type bump wheels are provided on the ends to eliminate magnet strikes due to occasional potholes, incline approaches and speed bump type obstacles.
Choose from 2 different models with different magnet strengths, and 6 different magnet lengths from 3 to 8 feet, to get the perfect setup for your application.

Remote controlled height adjustment without leaving the cab of your vehicle!
With outdoor rated IP65 12-volt DC actuators rated at 562 lbs each and 7.5” inches of up and down movement for remote controlled raising and lowering of magnet from raised travelling to lowered sweeping position.
The ALPHA is the same as the AETHER magnetic sweeper but with the addition of the remote-controlled electric actuators for up and down movement.
Like the AETHER the ALPHA was designed for those off-road dirt and gravel situations where more ground strike prevention is needed.
The 10” x 3” flat proof bump wheels on the ends prevent the magnet from hitting the ground and from sinking into loose surfaces, and the wheeled outriggers provide additional ground strike prevention in the middle of the magnet’s overall length.

Hanging just any magnet from a street sweeper doesn’t guarantee it will pick up metal debris. It’s possible to hang a magnet from a street sweeper that only picks up debris if the sweeper is moving very slowly, or it might not pick up debris at all if it’s hung too high. Therefore, get one that will pickup debris over the entire operating speed range of your street sweepers.

3 Questions to Ask Before Buying a Street Sweeper Magnet
How easy is the magnet to clean off?
A magnet may work well at picking up debris, but how easy is it to clean off? Think through how you would clean the magnet off step by step. Make sure it makes sense to you and your situation. Pay attention to the details of how this will work from start to finish, right up to the point of getting the debris in the garbage or scrap bin. Opt for a Quick Clean off Sleeve so that clean off is easily done. This ensures the magnet will be cleaned off more often and as a result it will stay at maximum effectiveness.
How good is the magnet at hanging on to the debris that it picks up?
You are not going to be cleaning your magnet off constantly, so it’s important that when your magnet does pick up a nail or screw that the magnet secures the debris so that it won’t fall off if the magnet is suddenly shaken because of a bump. The last thing you want is for the debris to fall off again. Make sure your magnet has some feature like our “Wrap Around”, it makes the debris holding capacity higher and you’ll find in practice that most of your debris ends up on the side of your magnet not the bottom of it. And that’s a good indication to you why we have this feature.
How far off the ground will the magnet be positioned?
We want to ensure our products meet your expectations therefore make sure you look at our “maximum lifting height” specification. We bench test all of our magnetic sweepers to determine their maximum lifting height using a two-and-a-half-inch standard nail. Everyone knows what a two-and-a-half-inch nail looks like which is why we use this standard measure of magnet strength and it will give you a good idea of magnet performance. Remember, these maximum lifting heights are in bench tests. As speed increases, magnets need to be lowered to pick up the same debris. Therefore, if you have faster moving street sweepers, which most street sweepers are as they travel around their work area, they need strong magnets to pick up metal debris at those speeds.

Why equip a street sweeper with a magnet?
To prevent flat tires on the street sweeper itself. Contrary to what even we would have thought, there’s much more metal debris out there than we thought based on the stories we hear.
To pick up metal items that are very difficult for the street sweeper itself to pick up and otherwise wouldn’t get swept up. Given the shape and weight of some metal pieces like nails they aren’t the easiest things for street sweepers to pickup with their broom and vacuum systems alone making a magnet necessary to pickup this metal debris.

Make Clean Off Easier
Cleaning off a hanging magnet is normally quite difficult. Especially if that magnet is mounted underneath a vehicle where it is hard to access because of limited room. If a magnet is hanging a few inches off the ground under a vehicle, how do you clean it off? You can't use a kick down plate that's hinged on one side of the magnet because there's not enough room to fold it down even if you did the magnet would pick up the debris again. And you, can't use a pull up handle design because there's no room under the vehicle. A Quick Clean Off Sleeve is the only method that will work.
