Convertible Shot Blasting Clean-Up Magnetic Sweeper

Photon Towable Shot Blast Magnetic Sweeper

Superior Performance and Unmatched Efficiency, Now at a Lower Price

The Photon Ceramic Magnet for Shot Blasting takes the efficiency and speed offered by the Atmos and delivers it at a more accessible price point for medium to large shotblasting operations. The Photon’s Continuous discharge Ripwhirl technology represents a quantum leap in efficiency over conventional magnet brooms. Shot is taken from the magnetic field by the finned PVC drum and deposited into on-board debris bins; allowing for maximum pickup power all the time and the ability to sweep without losing magnetic strength and missing shot.

The Photon boasts unparalleled capability when it comes to capturing and containing metallic debris. The removeable debris bins have a shot carrying capacity of 84 lbs which can be doubled by purchasing additional bins that fit on the top rails of the chassis. This extended carrying capacity significantly reduces the need for frequent emptying, maximizing productivity and minimizing clean-up time after a job.

Magnetic power is concentrated in two points along the 50” inch sweeping width, these points are indicated by blue markers on the chassis. At these points, the Photon can pull S550 shot out of cracks / control joints up to 1 ¼” inches deep. The Photon Ceramic Magnet for Shot Blasting rolls smoothly on precision bearings and can easily be pushed or towed to cover ground at speeds unmatchable by conventional magnets. Say goodbye to the tedious task of cleaning up after standard flip up magnets and embrace the effortless continuous discharge technology of the Photon.

Surface Prep Clean-up Streamlined and Optimized

Photon Continuous Discharge Magnetic Sweeper for Shot Blasting

The Photon magnetic sweeper can offer similar performance to the Atmos magnet at a much lower price point. The features that have made the Atmos an industry leader for shot blasting cleanup are carried over to the Photon. The Photon rolls easily on sealed precision bearings and non-marking thermoplastic wheels, the drive wheels are clutched to allow freewheeling and pivot turns while still driving the clean-off drum. Magnetic power gets used to hold onto shot when using a normal magnet, this reduces the amount of power available to pick up more shot. The finned PVC drum on the Photon is being driven and cleaning the magnet as its being pushed so this doesn’t happen with the Photon. The constant magnetic pulling power increases the efficiency of clean-up by up to 5 times over normal flip-up style magnetic sweepers.

Features of Photon Ceramic Shotblasting Magnet

This is the new Photon magnetic sweeper by Blue Streak Equipment. So, this magnet is a continuous discharge shot blast cleanup magnet based on the Atmos design, but the difference with the Photon is that it uses ceramic magnets that are arranged so that they nearly match the pulling power of the Atmos. While the Atmos uses rare earth magnets, which saves on weight and is slightly stronger, the Photon uses C8 ceramic magnets that are permanently charged, which, while heavier, offer similar performance at a much lower price point.

The Photon weighs 191 pounds, so it is heavier than the Atmos, but since it’s on the ground and it’s rolling, it’s not a huge difference when you’re pushing it. It might be different when you’re unloading it from a truck.

The Photon rolls on eight-inch non-marking wheels with precision bearings and clutch drive hubs. What the clutch drive hubs allow you to do is freewheel, so when you’re turning the magnet or pivoting it you don’t have to worry about the wheel skipping along the ground or lifting it up or anything. You can just pivot it in place, and it will continue to drive the drum, which takes the shot you collect and puts it into the bins.

The Photon bins hold 42 pounds of shot each, and there are two bins on there, so you get a grand total of 84 pounds of shot capacity. Photon also has a front caster wheel, which you can see kind of directs the magnet and takes a bit of the weight off of the drive hubs. The front caster is rated for 500 pounds of load, and each of the wheels on the side is rated for 750 pounds.

So, the Photon is a ceramic magnet. The way this works is the power is concentrated in a few spots along the sweeping width. These spots are indicated with these blue markers, which tell you where the strength is the highest on the magnet. With that information, you know that if you’re going over a crack, you line up the blue marker over the crack, and that will give you the most pulling power to get the shot out of the bottom of the crack.

The Photon can pull S550 shot out of a crack that’s an inch and a quarter deep or a control joint, and it’ll do that on those points where the blue indicators are. That is slightly down from the Atmos’s inch and three quarters, but it comes at a lower price tag.

This unit is also convertible—you can push it, as we’re doing right now, or if you fold the handles down, it can be attached using just a normal pin hitch to a golf cart, small tractor, or whatever else you have on site. That’ll make it a tow-behind, which obviously makes it a lot easier to use.

New for these, we also have rubber bushings that sit on the bottom of the debris pans. What that does is, as you’re driving around and going over bumps, you don’t hear the bins rattling around all the time. These just cut down on noise and make it a more pleasant experience to operate.

We’ve got some shot laid down on the ground here, just concentrated for demonstration purposes, and Brian can push it over as fast as he wants. The faster he pushes, the better, because it cleans off the shot faster.

Because the sweeper is a continuous discharge magnet, it will never be losing any pickup power as you would with a flip-up style magnet. This thing is continuously removing the debris from the magnetic field, which ensures you’re always at full strength. With that, you can always operate at the same speed; you don’t have to slow down to avoid missing any shot.

What that does is obviously increase your efficiency, but it also increases the thoroughness of the cleaning job, so you can be sure that you got everything on the first pass. You don’t have to go back for a second one, and you don’t have to slow down because you’re missing shot because the magnet’s filling up. The only time this is going to start missing shot is when those bins get full, which, like I said, is 84 pounds of capacity between the two. So, you’ve got a long time you can go before you have to start worrying about emptying it. Then, when you do want to empty it, all you have to do is just pick those bins up like you saw Brian do earlier, and then just dump it right back in your machine.

You can reuse this shot pretty much endlessly until it is disintegrated. You just pick up those bins like that—they just pop right out—dump right back in your machine, and you’re good to go. You see it picks it right back up.

The hubs on this thing are completely sealed off, so what that does is ensure that you get no metal shavings or dust inside your bearings, so you can always be sure you’ve got a smooth action and you don’t have to worry about your bearings getting all gummed up with metal.

This thing is obviously really easy to handle—just pivots, you can turn it in place like that, and it’ll keep driving the wheels. It’s built of pretty heavy-duty aluminum, and the front caster and drive wheels just make it a very smooth operating machine.

Push-Type or Tow-Behind Convertible Magnet

Photon Ceramic Shot Blast Magnetic Sweeper On Site

The Photon Ceramic Magnet for Shotblasting is specifically designed for cleaning up after large shot blasting projects. The 50”inch sweeping width cleans as fast as you can walk thanks to the continuous discharge technology. Turning the steel handles around on the Photon will allow the Photon to be towed using a standard wagon style pin hitch. Combining the tow behind functionality with the massive carrying capacity lets the Photon cover a huge space quickly and effectively.

Operating the Photon Ceramic Magnet for Shotblasting

Okay, so here is our new Photon magnetic sweeper. This thing’s a continuous discharge model based on the Atmos, and we’re just at a job site in Guelph right now, going over a spot that was just shot blasted.

So these guys already went over it with our Fusion model once, which is why there’s not a lot of shot left, but we’ll get whatever they missed, and I’ll explain the features and functions of this Photon to you. So the Photon, like I said, is based on the Atmos, but it uses our C8 magnet system. So it’s a ceramic magnet, which obviously makes it a bit heavier, but it works at a very similar level to the Atmos’ rare earth magnets, but at a much lower price point.

So this thing weighs about 200 pounds—I think it’s 191, technically, 191-point-something—but that really isn’t an issue when you’re pushing it because it’s very light. Wow, it feels very light when it’s rolling on its bearings here.

So this has precision bearings on every wheel. It’s got a 750-pound load capacity on either side of the drum here, and these wheels on the drum are actually clutched drive wheels. So, as you can see, that one’s moving backwards, that one’s moving backwards—you can pivot it completely in place, and it’ll still drive this drum, which is constantly shooting the shot that you pick up with the magnet into the debris bins.

So, each of these debris bins holds 42 pounds, and obviously, there’s two of them, so that’ll give you a capacity of 84 pounds of shot, but if you order more bins from us, you can double that up by adding two more on these rails here. These will actually sit right on top of here, and you can double up your capacity.

So with that, you know, you can go for a really long time without having to clean it off, which is obviously a big benefit compared to a normal flip-up magnet.

And the benefits of this over a flip-up mag, you know, is just because of the finned drum. So the finned drum is always taking shot out of that magnetic field, throwing it into the bins, which gives you full lifting capacity at any point.

So because the magnet’s already always clear of debris, you’re not using any magnetic power to hold material onto the magnet—you’re only ever using it to pick up material. So it’s always at max capacity, so it’s always picking up as much as it can, which allows you to walk as fast as you want. Or, with this one, you can convert it to a tow-behind by flipping these handles down. You hook this to, like, a lawnmower or a golf cart or whatever you’ve got on site just with a normal pin, and then you can, yeah, just tow it as fast as you want. And as fast as you tow, the faster it shoots debris out into the bins.

So it’s constantly working at max capacity. You’ll probably see the two blue marks on the chassis here—so what those are is indicators of where the magnetic strength of this ceramic magnet assembly is the highest. So what that gives you is an indicator—like, see here, there’s a little crack on the ground. If you keep that blue indicator over the crack, it’ll pick up shot from cracks up to an inch and a quarter deep. So that’s a bit lower than the, um—or it’s a bit less pickup power than the Atmos, but you get it at a much lower price point because it’s a ceramic magnet instead of rare earth.

So this Photon is made out of all welded and bolted aluminum, it’s very sturdy. We’ve had this basic chassis design around for a long time. We’ve made a couple updates to it—like now it has the rubber bushings on the debris pans, which keep the noise down. Before, these would kind of clank around a little bit. And then we’ve updated the drive hub system, so it’s a more sealed universal fit to more of our sweepers.

That keeps all your debris away from the bearings and ensures you have a long service life on this magnet. So all the parts of this magnet are available on our website, so if anything does break—like, say you bust the fin or your wheels fall off somehow from melting them, I don’t know—you can get replacement parts, so you can keep this thing working. It’s not just a throwaway unit, it’s going to last a long time.

So this is the Photon continuous discharge magnetic sweeper by Blue Streak Equipment.

Ceramic vs Rare Earth & Continuous Discharge vs Standard Flip-Up Magnets

Ceramic powered continuous discharge magnets for shotblasting were previously impractical and under-powered for effective cleanup after shot blasting operations. Bluestreak Equipment’s proprietary method of charging the C8 ceramic magnets has nearly closed the gap in performance between Rare Earth and Ceramic magnets. The Photon Continuous Discharge Magnet for Shotblasting can pull s550 shot from a depth of 1 ¼” inches, this is a half inch less than the Rare-Earth Atmos. Weight also increases when using Ceramic magnets, this isn’t a factor when pushing the magnet as the wheels and precision bearings make operation easy but can be a factor when loading / unloading the magnet into a truck.

While the ceramic powered Photon magnet weighs more and has less power than the Atmos, does that really affect regular use? In most cases no, unless cracks deeper than 1 ¼” inches are a regular occurrence on job sites. Take a look at the video below to see what long time shot blaster Reno Alberts has to say about his preference between Rare Earth and Ceramic magnets and  continuous discharge vs standard magnets is.

So we’re here with Reno today at the East Star Shop blasting facility, and this is, I think, our first Fusion we made. We gave it to you guys a year ago. How’s it been?

It’s a wonderful, wonderful magnet. I mean, I can’t say enough about it. It’s user-friendly, it’s very quick, very easy to dispense the shots in front of the machines. It picks up shots amazingly. I mean, I can’t say enough about it.

Okay. Yeah, I see you guys put a little chain on. You put a little chain on it. What’s the chain for?

We put it on the machine so that when we go down, and underground, the magnet comes with the machine.

Okay, great. And I think you’ve had a small chance to look at the ones we brought today. What do you think of those so far?

I think they’re great. They’re amazing magnets, bigger and better versions.

Bigger and better versions is better.

So you guys had a Theta before, right? One of our Rare Earth ones. And what do you think of the comparison between the ceramic versus Rare Earth power?

I think, you know what, there’s not—tell you the truth, there’s not much difference. We use them both; there’s not a whole lot of difference. If you don’t know the difference, you can’t tell.

Yeah, other than when you try to lift it up.

Yeah, right.

But if you guys are carrying it on the machine, then it doesn’t matter anyway.

That’s right. That’s right.

So would that be a consideration for you guys if you were going to use a bigger one? Would you tend to go to ceramic or Rare Earth?

It wouldn’t matter to us. It wouldn’t matter because they both work very, very well. The only thing I’ve seen so far with the ceramic is just if you’re trying to get one person to lift that out of a truck, you might need two people. But if you’re not, then they’re pretty much all manageable.

Yeah, for sure. As long as you’re not dealing with cracks that are three inches deep.

That’s right.

Yeah, it doesn’t seem like you guys have any of those here today.

And you’ve had, previously, a flip-up model with the handle you pull, right?

That’s correct, spot onto the ground.

Yeah. Is this a big improvement over that?

It’s a massive improvement. The reason is you can go continuously without releasing the shots, so you can go until the tray is full, which means that if you’re working on a large area, it makes a big difference. It’s a big productivity change.

Yeah, it is. It’s definitely worth the money that we’ve paid for it. We don’t use the other ones anymore; they just stay in the shop.

Yeah, so these are a lot faster too, because you don’t have to slow down how fast you walk.

That’s right. The faster you walk, the faster it cleans. I mean, the other ones did the job; these pick up better.

Right, yeah, you’re missing less. You don’t have to go over a second time.

And what happens with these that I find the most important is, with the other version, once the magnet is full, then you lose a lot of shots—a lot of shots stay behind, which means you have to go for a second pass. With this, the magnet is always empty, which is much better. It gives you more pulling power rather than holding power.

Absolutely, absolutely. You spend most of your power pulling the shot out of the floor rather than just holding it onto your magnet.

Exactly, and then having to dump it yourself. No, it’s a great unit.

Thanks a lot for the input, Reno.

No problem, no problem. You know what, anytime you guys want to do another one, let me know.

Easily Recharge Shot Blasting Machines with Removeable Debris Bins

The Photon has removeable debris bins with approximately 42lbs of shot capacity each for a total of 84lbs. This can be doubled by purchasing additional debris bins that can rest on the two aluminum rods above the Photon’s drum when not in use or full. The bins now have rubberized bushings to reduce clatter while operating the sweeper. The Photon won’t start leaving behind shot until the debris bins are overflowing, once this happens, they can be easily removed and dumped back into the hopper of your shot blaster. See the video below for a demonstration of this process.

Okay, so here is cleaning out the bins of the Photon Magic Sweeper. So this thing obviously has the two 42-pound capacity trays on the front, and once these start to get full you might start missing shots. In this case, they’re obviously not full, but to clean them out you just remove it from the sweeper and dump it right back into the hopper of your machine, and then they just go right back into place.

So with the Photon and Atmos, you can also order more bins for it and double your carrying capacity by utilizing the two rails on the top of the sweeper to hold more bins. So just like that, you reload your machine, and you’re ready to keep blasting.
