There are 3 types of magnets for pickup trucks differentiated by their mounting position:
Front mounted magnets are mounted similar to a snow plow, they allow you to pick up debris before you drive over it, but they also tend to be more expensive.
Tow behind truck magnets come in a number of varieties to suit different uses. Can be swapped between tow vehicles easily and work better for situations with the need to pick up bigger debris at higher speeds.
Hanging magnets can be mounted easily using trailer hitch receivers, either on the front or rear of a truck. These magnets for trucks are a simple and reliable way to prevent flats.
The Wrasse hanging magnetic bar is designed for use on “flat terrain”. It is extremely versatile because it comes in many different sizes, in terms of strength and width. The Wrasse hanging magnet bars are available in widths from 26” – 98” inches and in 3 different magnet housing sizes: 2” x 5” inches, 3” x 3” inches, and 4.5” x 4.5” inches each level of housing size offers more magnetic strength than the previous.
The Wrasse can hang from almost any piece of equipment if the ground the vehicle traverses is fairly even so that the magnet bar doesn’t hit the ground all the time which can cause damage to the housing. The Wrasse hanging magnet bar functions very well at allowing the equipment operators to clean environments while they do their normal tasks.
There are also optional Quick Clean Off Sleeves available for the Wrasse. A PVC Quick Clean Off Sleeve is available for the 3″x 3″ inch and 4.5″ x 4.5″ inch models which makes cleaning debris off the magnet bar easy. A Heavy-Duty Aluminum Quick Clean Off Sleeve is available for some 4.5” x 4.5” inch sweeping widths, this sleeve also assists in cleaning debris from the magnet and increases the durability of the sweeper.

The Yacare magnetic sweeper is a 72 inch wide, durable off road tow behind magnetic sweeper with an easy to use Spring Assisted Clean Off system and torsion ride suspension that smooths out rough terrain!
The Yacare clean off system is entirely different from both the HOG and RHINO. It replaces the Quick Clean Off Sleeve system with an easier to use, more durable long term solution that’s especially helpful for heavy debris conditions.
More power and advanced durability provided by all steel and stainless steel construction and easy effortless clean off with dual debris release levers provide sound rationale to move up from the Rhino to the Yacare.
Yet the Yacare keeps all the features that makes the Rhino so popular; the pick up performance in off road conditions provided by the “wrap around” design, the adjustable sweep height, flat proof tires, adjustable hitch height and optional debris digging rake accessory. The suspension system also increases towability of the Yacare magnet through rough terrain, reducing strain on the chassis of the sweeper and tow vehicle.
Replacing the safety flags on the Rhino are the RED colored lid and “MAGNETIC SWEEPER” signage on the back of the Yacare unit, to ensure that high visibility is maintained.
This thing is built like a tank! Check out the CAD drawings.

The Caiman magnetic sweeper is one step up from the Yacare magnetic sweeper.
It is like the Yacare because it has an enclosed magnet and Dual Spring Assisted Debris Release Handles, but it’s wider at 82 inch wide and has much more power with 50% more magnets.
More power and wider sweeping width makes it a good choice for towing behind pickup trucks, larger tractors and UTVs such as John Deere Gators, Kubota side by sides, etc.
The Caiman also has solid pick up performance in off road conditions provided by the “wrap around” design, the adjustable sweep height, flat proof tires, adjustable hitch height and optional debris digging rake accessory. The torsion ride suspension system increases control in rough terrain and reduces stress on the sweeper and tow vehicle’s chassis.

The Seeker Airmag FOD Control Magnetic Sweeper was designed in association with some of the biggest international airports in Ontario. The London International and Toronto Pearson International Airport gave input on features they needed for effective FOD control at their facilities. With these inputs in mind, Bluestreak Equipment built the new industry leader in metal FOD control.
A massive 12” x 3” x 60” inch alternating pole C8 ceramic magnet has twice the magnetic power of the Piranha magnet assembly and more surface area to hold onto collected debris so clean-off doesn’t have to happen as often. Clean off is accomplished by a counterweighted lever that needs to be manually pushed down to swing the magnet housing up and away from the stainless-steel debris pan to release the collected debris. From there debris can be collected using included Powerstik Pro Elite magnets and dropped into onboard FOD containment buckets.
The Seeker Airmag is built to pick up metal debris from runways at speeds up to 25km/h or 15mph but is stable at higher speeds so the magnet can get off the runway quickly if needed, and can cover ground around maintenance areas and the apron faster.
Available in 2 sizes: Seeker Airmag 60” & Seeker Airmag 180”

Pickup Truck hanging magnets quite frankly would be my last option, only because truck suspensions cause a lot of bounce, that can cause magnets to hit the ground. You don’t get that with front mount or trailer tow behind units. So if you need to use a hanging magnet, make sure there’s some protection from hitting the ground.
Tony – Bluestreak Equipment
Trucks obviously have suspension and they absorb bumps but when they do, the height of the truck from the ground changes, and therefore any hanging magnet can hit the ground. The rougher the ground, the more likely this could happen. So what’s going to prevent the magnet from hitting the ground if your truck suspension compresses 4 inches, or if it does what will protect the magnet? It’s something to consider when selecting a hanging magnet.
If you have an extensive debris problem that will almost certainly cause a flat tire if you run over the debris, then a front mount magnetic sweeper or hanging front mount is a necessity and may be the only consideration in your choice of magnet. A front mounted magnetic sweeper will pick up debris like nails before you run over it, something that seems obviously and practically much better than running over the debris before picking it up.
Hanging magnets are the most cost effective because a hanging magnet is essentially just a big magnet bar without most of the other mechanism’s that accompany a tow behind magnet or Front Mount magnet.
A Pickup Truck has to be used for other tasks. Therefore it’s important that the magnet can be mounted and dismounted from the Pickup Truck quickly and easily, or alternatively, the magnet can be locked into a position where it will not interfere with normal operation of the truck when not being used for sweeping. If not, then the tow behind solution may be best for you because it can be easily and quickly hitched up when needed.
A magnet may work really well at picking up debris, but how easy is it to clean off? Think through how you would clean the magnet off step by step. Make sure it makes sense to you and your situation. We try and do this for you so that clean off isn’t a difficult or time consuming task, but some manufacturers don’t. Pay attention to the details of how this will work from start to finish, right up to the point of getting the debris in the garbage or scrap bin.
You are not going to be cleaning your magnet off constantly, so it’s important that when your magnet does pick up a nail or screw that the magnet secures the debris so that it won’t fall off if the magnet is suddenly shaken because of a bump or if the bottom of the magnet hits the ground and the debris is wiped backward on the magnet. The last thing you want is for the debris to fall off again. Make sure your magnet has some feature like our “Wrap Around Feature”, it not only makes sure debris doesn’t get wiped off the bottom of the magnet, it makes the debris holding capacity higher and you’ll find in practice that most of your debris ends up on the side of your magnet not the bottom of it. And that’s a good indication to you why we have this feature.
It’s important to know how far off the ground you will position the magnet and also how far off the ground the magnet will still perform. For most of our magnets we give you the “Maximum Lifting Height” in the specs. This will tell you how far off the ground the magnet will perform. We want to make sure our products meet your expectations. Make sure you take a look at the magnet’s specifications for “Maximum in Lifting Height”. We bench test every one of our magnetic sweeper models to determine their maximum lifting height using a two and a half inch standard nail. Everyone knows what a two and half inch nail looks like which is why we use this standard measure of magnet strength and it will give you a very good idea of magnet performance. Many times we have videos of our products picking up various other materials so take a look at the videos in the video galleries. They give you a chance to “kick the tires” and see how the products perform. Many of these videos have been submitted by previous customers. See our Comparison Chart to compare lifting height.
The rougher, dirtier terrain your Pickup Truck operates in the stronger the magnet your likely going to want, because the magnet will have to be set higher to avoid constantly hitting the ground. The magnet will also need to pick up debris through some dirt therefore you need a stronger magnet. The rougher the terrain that exists because of things like bumps and pot holes, more you will want or favor a magnet that has some protection built in to the design to either deal with the abuse of hitting the ground or being able to move out of the way when it does hit the ground in order to prevent damage.

Sometimes a pickup truck is the only vehicle available to use for magnetic sweeper. But pickup trucks are versatile and magnetic sweepers can easily be attached to them because they have a high load capacity for towing and front mounts.
If it is the only vehicle available and a serious debris problem exists, this can mean that you have to use a front mount magnet to protect the tires from flats. Pickup trucks are also great for towing larger magnets to clean large areas regularly to keep them free from debris.
