After being contacted by a salt mine experiencing metal debris issues that are regularly causing expensive tire punctures. Bluestreak Equipment sent a towable magnetic sweeper to test the viability of using magnets as a part of regular mining road maintenance. Underground mines face continuous metal debris problems due to the constant heavy machinery use / maintenance, mining operations, and rock bolts falling from the ceiling and walls. Therefore, any vehicles operating underground get tire punctures regularly which can get very expensive when considering the cost of downtime and tire replacement for heavy equipment like loaders and dump trucks. The video shows what the Mine’s Maintenance Manager thinks of the Caiman magnetic sweeper and its place in regular mine road maintenance. The gallery below shows some photos from the site.
These are the rock bolts. That’s how it was there. So if you go through here, this is—they’ll puncture the little tires, forklift. These will get into the bigger tires. So you can see with one pass how many bolts we’re picking up. That’s a lot of stuff. That’s a lot of stuff—wires, cable.
So how much area do you think it covers—sorry, how far do you think you covered, like meters or kilometers? Okay, yeah.
That’s a minor bit. Oh yeah, so they go in the miner and they grind up the salt, and there’s 96 on a wheel. Yeah, sometimes they follow.
One thing they did say and note was these tires are solid-filled. I get why, but it bounces a lot—anything over like 10K. Yeah.
So what speed do you guys go then? About 10? Well, he probably—these things will go up to 30K or whatever, but he slowed it down because it was jumping. Yeah, but actually, I was quite impressed with the strength of it. Okay? It really was.
So all we did here is put a pintle hitch on them. No, we got all kinds of them, so I’m not sure where we had it adjusted, but right now all that stuff stayed on there. We got some long—like there’s one real long one here, but it can’t even stay. So, the grader—I’d have to take this and put it up, and it couldn’t get it down, like, down far enough, and it would just drop off, right? It wasn’t strong enough. It had to be up—it had to be this close to the ground. Well, that’s no good for this, so this is going to roll off. Yeah, you must have almost come into contact with that one to pick that up.
Um, I don’t know.
Oh yeah, I don’t know if you came back with a lot of stuff, that’s right. Yeah, if he was going 30 kilometers an hour, you might have missed 75% of the stuff.
Oh really, that much? Absolutely. Wow, and in London it was probably worse than that—it was probably 90%. Like all these, I look at everyone and think a minimum of five grand per one.
Staff have noticed a vast improvement in the new torsion ride axle for our magnetic sweeper. The additional suspension allows for a smoother ride, absorbing rough terrain and helping prevent metal loss from the magnet. The suspension system has made for a more enjoyable user experience and staff are pleased with the performance.
Kane Keating
Manager, DDF Operations
Regional District North Okanagan
Bluestreak Equipment sent a torsion ride suspension axle for the staff at RDNO to retrofit onto the Caiman they ordered previously. The video below shows the Caiman on site picking up metal debris from the landfill in Okanagan. Notice how the magnetic sweeper housing moves up and down through the terrain without bottoming out or transferring any shock into the chassis of the sweeper or truck.
So in the fall of 2023, Blue Streak Equipment went about upgrading our off-road magnetic sweepers. This includes the Yacare, the Cayman, and the Aardvark. Right now, just from some comments we got from customers, we decided to add a torsion ride suspension system. Then we sent these systems out to a couple of our customers across the country in the USA.
So this is a video of the Regional District of North Okanagan landfill. They bought a Cayman from us, and we had an axle, so we sent it out to them, and this is the video they sent us of it working around the facility. You can see the debris it’s picked up here; that’s a good demonstration of the wraparound feature. As they’re driving through the different bumps around the yard there, anything that gets hit by the ground—because it does flex now with the suspension—it’s just going to get caught on the back of the magnet.
So here’s the clean off. They just pop the levers down, and then you see the giant pile of nails there. Every one of those could be a flat tire, and everything just gets picked right back up. So this Cayman has the new torsion ride suspension system and the same Carlisle flat-proof wheels on it.
These guys have noted that it makes a big difference in the towability of the magnet. They said that it’s a lot easier for the operators to manage, and they’ve noticed a lot less strain appearing on the chassis. There’s the pile as they’re going to leave it in the scrap metal section, and then that’s just going to get pushed in and recycled later.
So you can hear it picking up metal there as they’re backing up. You can hear it earlier in the video too; if you go back in this, you can hear every little piece that clicks onto it. But this thing’s pretty easy to reverse—you can see those handles in your mirrors, so it’s pretty straightforward. Nice long tongue on it, and then yeah, you can hear every little piece just clicking onto the magnet as they back up.
So with the suspension system now, the ride height’s not fully set in a fixed position. It’s going to flex up and down a little bit, but it shouldn’t bottom out because it’s a progressive suspension system. As the sweeper gets hit harder, the spring rate stiffens, so it shouldn’t bottom out. And even if it does, the wraparound feature will retain any of the debris that you’ve picked up.
You can see it bouncing through all the ruts there. Normally, all that flex you see the magnet doing would be transferred right into the chassis of the magnet, then into the tongue, and then eventually into the truck. So this just reduces stress on everything and allows the rubber bushings to take all the hits.
The Caiman magnetic sweeper is ideal for picking up metal debris on large farms, at construction sites, manufacturing facilities, industrial site roads and yards, at site remediation activities, mining sites and roads, equestrian facilities and at landfills. It can also be used to clean up metal debris from crushed recycled concrete, and disaster recovery clean up activities. The Caiman Heavy Duty Tow Behind Magnet is optimized for off road conditions with torsion ride suspension to create a smoother towing magnet.
Many of these types of sites have a very real need to eliminate and prevent flat tires on vehicles. The cost, interruptions, and delays that flat tires cause create the need for the use of a magnetic sweeper. However metal debris can also be the root cause of injuries and accidents for both humans and animals at these sites.
The Caiman was designed specifically to pick up and remove debris such as scrap metal, nails, screws, wire, discarded pieces of metal from fabrication activities, bolts, nuts, pins, screw drivers, wrenches, metal strapping, etc.

Debris doesn’t get wiped off!
The “Wrap Around” magnet design on the Caiman ensures debris never gets wiped off the bottom of the magnet in grass or dirt conditions. The “Wrap Around” feature is an essential design feature if you will be using the magnetic sweeper in grass or dirt conditions and is one of the key features that make the Caiman truly off-road capable. The inset rear wheels, instead of wheels on the ends, also add to the Caiman’s off-road capabilities by ensuring the magnet is less likely to bottom out as often in very rough conditions because the wheels are closer together. Even with the torsion ride suspension system the sweeper resists bottoming out because as the suspension compresses the spring rate increases.

Keeps the Caiman looking great for years!
The paint job on the Caiman is durable and long lasting. The red painted steel lid that encloses the magnets is first sand blasted and then powder coated for durability.
The black painted parts of the Caiman are first blasted with Kerfjet #80 Garnet Stone and then primed with PPG High Build Epoxy primer (2 coats). They are then finished with PPG UROTEC Gloss Black (2 coats) and allowed to dry for 1 full day. Blasting with stone rather than sand creates a cleaner and smoother finish to prep for painting which provides a high quality “smooth” finished paint appearance. The paint finish is a urethane product which provides a harder finish than regular fast dry industrial paint or rust paint. This harder finish means it doesn’t scratch as easily and has a longer life.
Makes cleaning off the magnet easy!
The Caiman comes standard with a Dual Debris Release Lever Spring Assisted Clean Off System. Cleaning off the magnets takes only seconds. To clean off the Caiman magnetic sweeper when full of debris, just pull down on the spring assisted clean off handles. Pushing down on just one of the handles cleans one side of the magnet off, the other one cleans off the other side. Pushing down on the handle rotates the magnet inside the covered lid. The magnet will stick to a steel bar on the inside of the lid and stay in the “up” position while you get in your vehicle and pull the magnet ahead and away from the debris. You can then get out of your vehicle and lower the magnet again.
The Caiman utilizes permanently charged C8 Ceramic Magnets that will never need to be recharged. Power will never decrease, ensuring years of use.
The C8 Ceramic Magnets give the Caiman a strong magnetic field with a maximum lifting height of 10 1/2” inches using a 2 ½” inch nail.
This means if the bottom of the magnet is 10 1/2” inches off the ground it will pick up a 2 ½” inch nail in a bench test at zero speed. This amount of power means that you can set the sweeping height higher if needed in rough conditions and the magnet will still be able to pick up debris.

Adjust the hitch height from 14 – 24 inches!
The Caiman comes standard with a 2 inch ball receiver with an adjustable hitch height (from 14 inches to 24 inches, in 2” inch increments) that allows you to connect the Caiman to a vehicle with any hitch height and still keep the Caiman level. This ensures the bottom of the magnet is always parallel to the ground for maximum effectiveness. If you prefer a pintle ring instead of a 2” inch ball receiver, we offer an optional pintle ring accessory that replaces the 2” inch ball receiver.
Adjust the sweeping height
from 2- 6 inchs!
The Caiman sweeping height can be adjusted to accommodate any ground terrain conditions. The sweeping height is adjusted by turning the gold top link attachment that adjusts the wheels up and down. Turning the top link (gold colored in the photos) offers a “continuous” adjustment in the height of the sweeper. You can quickly adjust the sweeping height and change it depending on the terrain conditions. This way you can ensure you have the magnet as low as you can go without hitting the ground. Having the magnet closer to the ground increases the effective speed you can travel and increases the magnet performance. The torsion ride suspension system adds some variability to the set sweeping height but resists bottoming out because the spring rate is progressive.
The Caiman magnetic sweeper will pick up a 2 and 1/2 inch nail when the bottom of the magnet is 10 and 1/2 inches off the ground providing plenty of pickup power performance in dirt, gravel and off road conditions.
To maximize performance, we recommend setting the sweeping height between 3 and 4 inches in most situations. Sweeping height is set by turning the top link attachment on the rear wheels which adjusts the wheels up or down.
The Caiman Pickup Height Test is 10 and 1/2 inches
The Caiman comes standard with off road flat proof 16.5” x 6.5” Carlisle foam filled tires and 5 bolt hub and spindle wheels located close behind the magnet ensuring a consistent height off the ground is maintained when sweeping.
These wheels are for low speed operation only and not meant for on road high speed use.
The Caiman’s magnets are completely enclosed ensuring the magnet does not become covered with debris.
The magnets remain protected at all times inside the enclosed lid.
No matter what the terrain is you travel over, the magnets remain protected.
To ensure visibility and communicate to others in the vicinity that sweeping for debris is in progress, the Caiman has signage indicating “MAGNETIC SWEEPER” on the back of the lid that is viewable by persons and vehicles approaching from behind.
The wheels on the Caiman are inset from the end of the sweeper.
The inset wheels add to the Caiman’s off road capabilities by ensuring the magnet is less likely to bottom out in very rough conditions.
Strength and Durability for Long Term Use.
The magnet housing (inside the red covered lid) is made of stainless steel. In addition, the bottom pan (angled front portion, bottom portion, and vertical back portion) is stainless steel, the frame tube across the back of the Caiman is stainless steel, and the bottom 2 inches of the sides of the Caiman are also stainless steel.
The benefit of this construction is the strength and durability that steel offers, and stainless steel also ensures that these portions never become magnetized. Steel in the proximity of magnets can become magnetized slightly over time. Having these components made of stainless steel ensures they don’t become magnetized over time and ensures optimum performance.
The main benefit of this construction is that when you want to clean debris off the Caiman all of the debris will fall off when the debris release levers are pulled. This ensures a well functioning clean off mechanism.

The Yacare magnetic sweeper is popular because of the lower price point, durability, it’s many features and performance but you may want to move up to the Caiman for the following reasons;
Why you might want to purchase the Caiman instead of the Aardvark magnetic sweeper;
The optional DDR XL is a heavier duty debris digging rake that deploys easier and faster than the original. The DDR XL has 5/16” inch diameter spring teeth that can dig into the ground to loosen up any embedded metal debris so it can be caught by the magnet behind the rakes. The DDR XL is available in 62”, 74”, 86” and 98” inch widths so it will work with many different sweepers. The DDR XL also leaves behind a groomed surface that serves as a visual cue of what areas have been swept already. Rubber stone guards deflect flying rocks that get thrown by spring teeth to prevent damage to nearby equipment and personnel.
An optional Debris Digging Rake accessory can be purchased for offroad magnetic sweeper trailers. The Debris Digging Rake (DDR) slips on over the tongue of a trailer and agitates the ground. The 0.215” diameter agricultural tines can be set to varying depths to disturb the ground ahead of the magnet to loosen up embedded and compacted debris so that the magnet can pick up the debris as it passes over the ground behind the debris digging rake. The distinctive pattern left by the DDR when it is digging is also great as a guide for the operator indicating areas that have already been swept for debris.
